Who We Are
The Need
As a special education teacher with over 25 years of experience in the field, and 5 years working in an inclusion setting, I saw my students struggle with feelings of not belonging, social isolation and low self esteem.
School tends to prioritize academic success over social/emotional well being, and even with the best intentions, there is not sufficient time and resources dedicated to students’ social/emotional well-being and the nurturing of supportive friendships.
A Neuro-Affirming Answer
Welcome to BeFriend ASD, a neuro-affirming social group for autistic teens in NYC. BeFriend ASD was born out out of a need for a safe place for teens on the autistic spectrum to make and maintain friendships. Be a part of a vibrant community where autistic teens thrive in friendship, discover their unique strengths, and learn essential skills in a supportive, neuro-affirming environment.
Sessions are modeled after principles of Restorative Justice* to create a safe space for teens to share their life experiences, work through areas of difficulty, and fully immerse themselves in a supportive nurturing environment in which they can be their true, authentic selves.
*What is Restorative Justice and its role in the autism community?
Restorative practices are approaches and strategies used to build and maintain a supportive, connected community. These practices are grounded in the belief that relationships and people come first.
When someone makes a mistake or causes harm (through bias, discrimination, or mistreatment) restorative practices guide them in recognizing the effects of their actions, through open dialogue, to repair the damage, and help the community move forward together with accountability, empathy, shared meaning and renewed connection.
It also involves proactive, community-based efforts that build relationships and empathy to prevent future harm.
