Why is a pilot being offered?

What are the qualifications of the group leaders?
Christine Mordente, the founder of BeFriend ASD has over 25 years of experience in the field of special education. For six of those years, Christine worked closely with autistic teens in an inclusion program and a specialized school for students on the autism spectrum. Christine earned her M.Ed. in special education in 2003 and in 2024, she earned her post-graduate certification in school building leadership. She is a New York state certified special education teacher and school building leader.
To join the team: licensed social worker with experience working with autistic teens.
What makes BeFriend ASD neuro-affirming?
Our sessions will be conducted with trauma informed approaches, with an awareness of possible harms autistic teens have undergone in misunderstandings in a neurotypical society such as school and other social settings. We are not here to “fix” your teen as there is nothing to fix. We are here to offer a safe place to foster self-exploration and social connection.
What are the future plans for BeFriend ASD?
Once more cohorts have been run, BeFriend ASD will offer opportunities for larger social gatherings such as parties, proms, local trips, etc.
Parent/guardian coaching sessions will be offered by autistic life coaches/social workers to help families bridge the gap in communication that often occurs within neuro-divergent and non-neurodivergent family dynamics.
Once you and your teen are a part of BeFriend ASD, you will have access to ongoing events, connection and support. You will also have access to our monthly newsletter of resources and announcements of events.
